SpeakSee

SpeakSee is an assistive device that makes conversations visual for the Deaf and hard of hearing.  SpeakSee captures the speech in conversations and transcribes it into text on the smartphone, in real time. This way people with hearing loss can read what's being said.  For moderate to full hearing loss

Hearing aids, although great in many situations, are not always reliable for most people during group conversations. Since hearing aids amplify every sound around you, it can be difficult to focus on what’s being said, especially when multiple people are speaking at the same time and there’s background noise, and in those situations, even reading lips can be difficult.

As most day-to-day group conversations are not accessible to the Deaf and hard of hearing, many tend to avoid them, and that is exactly why we created SpeakSee!

With SpeakSee we want to support the Deaf and hard of hearing with building connections and expanding horizons, and we hope we have created something that will make it easier for people to showcase their talents, share ideas, and be part of all conversations.

High accuracy

The speakers position the microphones on their shirt, close to the sound source. We use sophisticated microphone technology to capture the speech. This drastically improves audio quality and accuracy of the transcripts. Also, when there is background noise.

State-of-the-art speech recognition

SpeakSee uses advanced speech recognition algorithms to transcribe speech to text in real time including puncutation

Phone Calls

SpeakSee can be plugged in to smartphones, conference call-systems and televisions.  The speech is captured an transcribed into text.  Always subtitles!

Does Speaksee work with phones?

In order to use SpeakSee for transcribing (smart)phone calls or videos will you need to plug in a jack cable into the SpeakSee hub. Then plug the other side of the cable into the device you wish to see the transcriptions.

Although we have done initial testing of this functionality on a number of devices, we can’t promise that this will work for all devices just yet.

What is the Phone Hub?

The hub is also the charging dock of the microphones. You can see the hub/charging dock on the header image on our home page.

Does it work with background noise?

Yes it does.  Since the speakers position the microphones on their shirt, close to their mouths, SpeakSee’s state of the art microphones, can accurately capture conversations, identify different speakers and transcribe it into text, in real time, even when there’s background noise

How many microphones can be paired up to the system?

The system can currently have 1 to 9 microphones paired up at a time.

How is Speaksee different from other speech-to-text apps?

There are three major differences that sets SpeakSee apart:

1. SpeakSee uses microphones that are placed near the speaker's mouth to capture speech. This means you won't have to ask everyone in your group to download an app and wait for them to install it and then explain how it works, instead, just hand out the microphones and carry on with the conversation!

2. SpeakSee works when there is background noise, like in restaurants. Our microphones use sophisticated beam forming algorithms that isolate the speech and leave out background noise. This enhances accuracy of the transcripts, even in noisy environments.

3. SpeakSee can also be plugged in to smartphones, conference call-systems and televisions, and transcribe the speech to text. Always subtitles!

SpeakSee Press release

With SpeakSee, the deaf and hard of hearing no longer have to avoid group conversations.

Australian designed SpeakSee device aims to make conversations accessible for the over 466 million people with hearing loss worldwide. The Dutch company demonstrated its technology with a fully-funded campaign on Indiegogo in just 10 days.

Rotterdam, 22 July 2018 - SpeakSee has developed an assistive device for the deaf and hard of hearing consisting of a set of portable microphones that transcribe speech to text in real time using advanced speech recognition technology. The user turns on the microphones, hands them out and reads who says what on a smartphone app.

Australian Co-Founder Joshua Flowers explains:

“I always looked up to my Granddad as a kid. He was a talented, warm hearted, kind man. But as I got older, I gradually saw him increasingly struggle to take part in family conversations. We could no longer have a natural conversation with him. As a child I idolised him, and as an adult, I wanted to know him - but I couldn't, because of this comprehension barrier.’’
Subtitles anytime, anywhere

For those with hearing loss, not being able to take part in family conversation or business meetings is a frustrating and painful experience. People talking over each other makes it difficult to read lips and background noise further worsens the problem as hearing aids cannot discriminate between wanted and unwanted sounds.

Joshua adds:

“Nothing on the hearing aid market was working for my granddad, so I wondered if there was another way we could bridge this divide. After seeing how speech recognition was on the cusp of becoming a truly useful tool, I came up with a basic prototype of SpeakSee for my Granddad to use. We were overjoyed when we were able to conduct a proper conversation for the first time in years.’’

SpeakSee's state of the art microphone technology ensures that the system can accurately capture conversations, identify different speakers and transcribe it into text in real time, even when there's background noise. SpeakSee can also be plugged in to smartphones, conference call-systems and televisions to provide subtitles.

''It's small personal moments like seeing my granddad enjoy a conversation that drive our passion to help those with hearing loss. At SpeakSee, we aim to make better tools to bridge these unnecessary divides.''
